Alcorn State University is stepping into the future in a major way, becoming the first HBCU to fully integrate artificial intelligence into its academic ecosystem through a groundbreaking statewide initiative. In partnership with NVIDIA and educational institutions across Mississippi, the university is helping lead a bold push to embed AI into classrooms, research, and workforce development—positioning its students at the forefront of one of the fastest-growing fields in the world. More than a technological upgrade, the move signals a shift in how HBCUs are preparing the next generation—ensuring Black students aren’t just participants in the AI revolution but leaders shaping its impact.

According to a report from Mississippi Today, the initiative aims to train at least 10,000 Mississippians through a curriculum focused on AI skills, machine learning, and data science. As part of the nonbinding agreement, NVIDIA will provide 15 supercomputers to Alcorn State, significantly expanding the university’s technological capacity and access to cutting-edge tools.

“This collaboration with NVIDIA is monumental for Mississippi. By expanding AI education, investing in workforce development, and encouraging innovation, we, along with NVIDIA, are creating a pathway to dynamic careers in AI and cybersecurity for Mississippians,” said Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves during a 2025 news conference announcing the partnership. “These are the in-demand jobs of the future—jobs that will change the landscape of our economy for generations to come. AI is here now, and it is here to stay.”

Through the partnership, participating schools will also receive graphics processing units (GPUs) from NVIDIA, along with training to help students and faculty effectively use the technology. While Mississippi’s initiative marks a significant step forward, it is part of a broader national effort—states like Utah, California, and Oregon have also partnered with NVIDIA to expand AI education and workforce readiness. The company has emphasized that these collaborations are key to strengthening the United States’ position as a global leader in artificial intelligence.

“Together, we will enhance economic growth through an AI-skilled workforce, advanced research, and industry engagement, positioning Mississippi as a hub for AI-driven transformation to the benefit of its communities,” said Louis Stewart, head of strategic initiatives for NVIDIA’s global developer ecosystem.

As the demand for AI talent continues to surge, Alcorn State’s role in this initiative puts it at the center of a rapidly evolving industry. This isn’t just about access to new technology—it’s about ownership, innovation, and opportunity. By stepping into this space early, Alcorn is helping redefine what’s possible for HBCUs and their students. And in a field shaping the future of everything from healthcare to cybersecurity, that kind of leadership doesn’t just matter—it changes the game.
